How Using Directories Can Get You More Targeted Website Traffic

Monday, August 17th, 2009
You have a lot of options as far as methods to drive traffic to your website is concerned; one method which has been in use for some time now is submitting links of your site to Web directories. A Web directory (also known as a link directory) is a directory of the World Wide Web and is somewhat similar to the yellow pages in the way that it lists websites (and links to them) by category. The idea of these sites is to present links to different sites in an easy to navigate format.

A web directory is different from a search engine in that their display of links is not pulled up by keywords (the search terms you type into an engine), instead listing websites by category. The category a particular website falls into depends on its content as a whole instead of the content of just one page or by keywords. This means that a website will only come up on one or two categories. Web directories allow site owners to submit their links; from there, an editorial team decides on the appropriate category for the site.

RSS directories are somewhat similar to Web directories, but have collections of RSS feeds instead of links to websites.

 Directories in General

There are directories which are very general, listing websites of all types in one place. There are also some niche directories which list web pages only in certain languages or are targeted towards one area of interest.

One popular general Web directory is the Open Directory Project. This is one of the best known Web directories; it is well liked for its large number of categories and large amount of listings in each. The ODP is also used by search engines and even other Web directories.

People often debate the usefulness of Web directories to websites; search engines use this information (particularly ODP’s) without really incorporating any of the data. Many search engines test using clustering, making them somewhat less useful for site owners. A lot of work has gone into building a simpler directory development process, using scripts to automate the link submission process or by using PHP. Social bookmarking software for the web has also brought new ideas to the process of categorization, through tagging websites by content (think about del.icio.us and other social bookmarking applications).

Why Use Directories For More Targeted Website Traffic?

Let us suppose that a website receives only a small amount of traffic from a directory as opposed to that coming in from search engines. However, you do not necessarily need to submit links to Web directories.

Targeted website traffic is more often the result of a directory search; someone looking through directories is likely to be looking for something in particular; something which meets a specific need. This targeted traffic is far more likely to be a prospective customer than is someone who just happens upon your site accidentally.

Search engines give a ranking to website or link directories, especially those which are niche-oriented. These niche directories are more commonly run by humans rather than by computers, making them a more reliable source of information – and the links within them more credible, since they are human-evaluated.

Increase Website Traffic: How to Boost Web Traffic With Article and Video Marketing

Saturday, August 15th, 2009
numerous ways to increase website traffic. This article focuses on 2 of the most effective methods – article marketing and video marketing.

But before you start doing these 2 techniques, or any other promotional methods to increase website traffic, you might want to just focus your time and effort on things that you like to do, or tasks that you have a natural talent for… unless you’re starting out on a tight budget.

If you find that you have a weakness or you don’t particularly like doing a specific activity, then you should consider outsourcing it to other people.

Focusing on your strengths and delegating mundane tasks to others will help you in attaining your desired results at the soonest possible time.

Increase Website Traffic Through Article Marketing

If you’re having a difficult time coming up with ideas, or you don’t have a passion for writing, article writing could be outsourced to a qualified writer who understands the market or industry you’re involved with. If not, confirm if the ghostwriter can do the much-needed research to be able to write the type of articles you require.

If you have a tight budget, you might consider doing it yourself initially until you’re earning a comfortable income to hire freelance writers.

Of course, if you love writing (meaning you don’t regard it as a task but as an enjoyable pastime), then writing is something you can do. After all, nothing can give more satisfaction than making money while doing something you enjoy.

Since article marketing is a powerful promotional tactic to increase website traffic with steady, long-term results, you should consider doing it either by yourself or by outsourcing.

After writing the articles, submit them to article directories. Now, instead of submitting your articles manually, some people recommend using article submission services or software. They can easily submit your content to hundreds, if not thousands, of article directories with just a few clicks of a button.

Article submission services usually charge you either by submission, or every month or quarter. Some of them offer you lifetime memberships for a one-time fee.

Using article submission services or software can be cheaper than hiring someone to manually submit your articles, but the disadvantage is that you’re not sure if they’re only submitting to sites that are reputable and trustworthy.

In case they submit to “not-so-good neighborhoods,” then getting a lot of backlinks from such sites would be useless; it may even prove to be harmful in the eyes of the search engine because getting thousands of backlinks all at once might send a red flag.

A great alternative is to simply gather a quality list of the most reputable, high page rank sites. Then you can hire a student or part-time worker to do the article submissions to these high quality sites.

Increase Website Traffic Through Video Marketing

Another method to increase website traffic is through video marketing. By creating and publishing your videos on video-sharing sites like YouTube and Yahoo Videos, you get to have extensive online coverage when it comes to authoritative video publishing.

I recommend that you do the video yourself, especially if you’ll be appearing in the video, as this creates a personal touch. A favorite tool for producing videos is the bargain video production camcorder called “The Flip”. With the Flip camcorder you just record the video you want to show online, plug it in your PC or laptop computer, and press a few buttons to release and share to the public.

But if you absolutely can’t do the video yourself due to extreme shyness, or if you’re unsure if your voice is good enough, then you could outsource the video creation. However, take note that you may need to invest a hefty amount if you want to outsource the creation of a high-quality, attention-grabbing video.

Video marketing provides some excellent SEO benefits to increase website traffic. Google owns Youtube, so you can expect Google to favor Youtube videos in their search results if you put in the right keywords.

Don’t just upload to Youtube though. Upload your videos on other video-sharing sites too like Google Videos, Yahoo Videos, AOL Videos, Metacafe, Revver, and Veoh, among others. You may use a free video submission service like Tubemogul.com to submit your video simultaneously to all your selected video-sharing sites.

To have higher chances of your video ranking in the search engines for your keyword, put your keyword in the title of the video, and then put all related keywords in the tags.

If your video gets popular, getting to increase your website traffic should be a breeze. Just test it and see how effective it is.

Leverage Your Articles By Turning Them To Videos

Are there other ways to monetize your articles aside from submitting them to article directories? Sure! You can turn your articles into videos. You could either use camtasia and record the powerpoint version of your article as a video, or you can speak directly in the video as if you’re giving helpful advice.

Did you also know that you could create a powerpoint version of your articles and submit them to slideshare.net? Just make sure the url you put in the presentation is posted in a non-promotional way (either in the beginning or end), as slideshare prohibits us to do any marketing; but you can still get exposure to your site in a non-obvious and acceptable way.

Hope these methods help increase your website traffic and skyrocket your profits.

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
It is important that you understand how to increase your website traffic, but even more important is being able to read your website traffic statistics. Without understanding your website traffic statistics, you may be unaware of how little traffic you really are getting. It is vital that you know things such as how many visitors you are receiving, what time of the day you receive the most traffic and what things on your website seem to be the most popular. If you understand your website traffic statistics you will be able to do all of these things and more.

By knowing your website traffic statistics you can determine where most of your traffic is coming from to help you know what keywords to optimize. This will in turn help you climb higher on the search engines thus generating higher traffic.

Understanding your website traffic statistics will allow you to see what time of the day you’re receiving the most visitors at. Why is this important you may ask? Knowing this information allows you to know when you should change things on your website and when you should keep it the same. You don’t want to be making all kinds of changes while you’re having a rush.

If you make changes to your website before the rush, returning visitors will notice the changes and be more apt to return again to see what else you have added. New content is important in continuously drawing visitors back for more. Another advantage to knowing your website traffic statistics and what time of the day is most crowded is you can put specials on at that time. Knowing when you will be receiving a rush allows you to put special offers and bonuses on for a few hours during the most crowded times. This will impress your visitors and create more return visitors with referrals as well.

Knowing your website traffic statistics is important, but is much easier if you use a site stats program. Some of the more popular programs include Awstats, Webalizer, and Analog. The great thing about these programs is that they come free and are easily accessible right through your control panel, which is provided to you through your web host. They all have similar features that will help you find out things you may have never even thought of.

If you want to create a successful website you have to know how to read your website traffic statistics. Knowing how many hits per day you receive and what keywords to optimize are vital parts to success. Using a site stats program to read your website traffic statistics makes it a lot easier and is extremely convenient. If you learn how to read your website traffic statistics you can learn secrets and tricks to help get your website higher on the search engines and generate more traffic.

The Basics of Boosting Website Traffic!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
The basics of boosting website traffic revolve around getting more website links. This is the most misunderstood area for most new and even some experienced webmasters. Links are the lifeblood of any website for gaining authority or higher search engine index rankings and directly receiving traffic by people who click on the links.

The hot tip when going for effective website links and boosting traffic is to create links that have both search engine love and induce the viewer to click to find out more information. The most used paid means of this type of linking is Google’s Adwords Program.

The problem with Adwords, beside the expense, is the huge amount of competition and complexity of executing a profitable campaign. Many a smart webmaster loses his shirt trying to learn the ropes on Adwords campaigns. It can drive a sane man (or woman) crazy. It certainly can be done but the learning curve is brutal and expensive.

Three better solutions exist for boosting website traffic that are all free, and much easier to master. Two of these methods are similar and can be used together to make them even more effective. The third is the perfect solution if properly executed. Did I mention they were free too?

The first two involve writing and publishing articles. If you’ve been on the Internet more than a few days I’m sure you’ve heard or read about article marketing. But to do it well, you need to make sure you follow the three basic steps listed below.

Do Your Research - Make sure that the articles you write are of interested to your target group. Don’t just pull a subject out of the air, check to see what people are searching for, what the competition is, and make sure it provides value to the reader.

Double Team - Publish articles to a respected article directory like EzineArticles.com or Isnare.com. Then write an article to post on your website with the same subject matter but different content. Refer the reader of the published version to your website version. Use a good lead in, like very specific information, check list, or anything to attract the reader.

Content Rules - Any article you write must have some value to the reader. Headlines get their attention, the article provides value, and don’t forget the action item at the end to produce the results you want. Those three items must be present to make article marketing effective.

The third best boosting website traffic method is making comments or providing answers on other websites with similar subject matter to your website. Many overlook the value of keeping the subject matter related on any linking activity. Numbers help, but when you get a link from related subject, it increases the search engine respect for the link. And one way links are always a good thing.

Which in turn, will give you a higher index ranking for the link. But it also will mean that the people who do click on your link will be more targeted. This can be a huge factor in getting high authority links for the search engines and getting the visitor that you want.

If you sell a product or service on your website, getting targeted traffic as opposed to general traffic will greatly improve your conversion rate (number of visitors by number of purchases). After all, the traffic you want is potential buyers, not people surfing around looking for something to read.

So how do you find these subject related websites to make comments on and leave links? There are several ways to do this with the search engines. Do a search under the subject related keyword or phrase that you know will relate to your website. You should see websites that have forums, blogs, or comment areas that you can post information and leave a link in your signature.

Do not post crap, no value comments, or objectionable content. The website owner will most likely remove any comments that fit into those categories anyway. Provide valuable information to the reader, don’t solicit, be friendly and helpful. Demonstrate your value to the reader, and they will click on your link.

When looking for places to post comments, you can make sure you get both the possible click from the reader and the credit for the link by checking to see if they use what’s called the nofollow link method. In your browser there is a button that allows you to view the source of each web page. If you view the source and do a find or search for nofollow, it will show whether they use that linking attribute.

There’s some value even if you don’t get a link credit if the website has visitors that fit into your target group. But getting both the link value and targeted click is the best of both worlds. Posting on websites provides an easy way to get links and targeted website visitors. And posting on websites is much easier than sending out requests for reciprocal links that never get any response.

The basics of boosting website traffic should always include linking methods and the three free ways listed above can work well. Writing articles and posting on other related websites should be a part of anyone’s quest for more website traffic.
