List building plays a major role in developing good relationships with your site’s customers, clients and visitors. It can be used to get more traffic, leads and sales for your site or business.

For these reasons contact building should be high on your list of priorities when you’re marketing or promoting on the web. Fortunately, list building is an easy process that any site or webmaster can quickly set-up as long as you understand two simple, yet well-proven principles of list building.

To be really successful, your list building must incorporate these two key elements. Without these two main ingredients you will probably find building your contact list difficult and slow going. So it is worth your while to fully understand and utilize these two factors in your list building.

Any list should have these two key elements:

1. Value -

Your list should have value. It should offer something valuable to the one subscribing. It should offer important information, quality content, special deals/discounts, and more importantly, it should offer a valuable relationship or connection to an expert in the subject area of the list.

Subscribers join a list for the benefits it will bring them, whether it be valuable content, special deals or a connection to an expert in their area of interest; your list must have value for the subscribers. They must benefit from joining your list.

If you’re building a list, just write down all the benefits someone would receive from joining your site or list.

- get special valuable content

- receive special deals/discounts

- get training videos/workshops

- get timely announcements or news

Make these benefits your main selling points when you’re building your list. Don’t forget there may also be a psychological reason for joining your list - many people like being part of a group or membership site. It’s human nature, we all want to be emotionally involved with certain topics or causes, so don’t ignore this aspect when building your list. Everybody likes to feel included - lists can fulfil this emotional need.

Simply give your subscribers something of value and you will build your list quickly and easily.

2. Free

Whatever you offer - make sure it is Free. The quickest way to build any list is to give away free valuable content, information, videos, reports, ebooks, discounts, prizes… everybody loves a free gift. Just make them an offer they can’t refuse.

Some marketers argue that giving away free items will attract the “wrong kind” of customer or subscriber - people that will never buy anything because they will expect it to be free. But this has more to do with the nature of your gift and the kind of contacts you’re building - giving away free buying guides on how to purchase real estate, fast cars, LCD TVs, laptops… will definitely attract the right “buying customer”. If you’re into selling, you just have to adjust your marketing to incorporate the free element correctly.

Besides, giving away something free is the first step in starting an ongoing relationship with your subscribers. It gets the ball rolling. It is one of the most effective ways to build your list quickly and easily. Just make sure you’re giving away something of value to the person receiving it and they will turn to you, time and time again, to find what they’re looking for on the web.

List Building–top 5 Techniques for Massive Growth

The first aspect is growing a list, and all things being equal, the bigger the better. But when the focus is only on building a bigger list, it is easy to forget about responsiveness and allow just anyone to subscribe. When one builds a list just for the sake of the numbers, responsiveness often goes down.

The second aspect, of course, is responsiveness. A list must be developed from a source of buyers and then cultivated.

So it is important that you steer clear of list building via buying lists or simply getting on a bunch of lists and putting their owners on your lists. You don’t read their emails, nor do they read yours. Go for buyers when list building!

So what are the top 5 techniques for building a list?

In order of my preference:

1) Article marketing. This really works. I write a lot of articles, and track my responses, and my list is growing as a direct response of the articles I write and send out. Simply write articles on your product’s topic, send the articles to several of the article directories online today, and watch your subscriber count go up.

2) Google Adwords. This really works. People who search on Google are buyers. Yes, it is expensive, but if you are willing to work at it, you can develop a campaign that produces a return on your money. The thing with Adwords is that you cannot just find 100 keywords and write an ad and bid a random amount. You must study the tracking numbers, rotate different ads for effectiveness, and bid effectively. Know what your cost per subscriber is, and your revenue per subscriber.

3) Ezine advertising. The key with this is testing. Some ezines go out to unresponsive lists, others to highly responsive lists. The only way to find this out is to test. Put tracking links on every piece of advertising you do.

4) Search engine results. This takes a lot more time, but when you build links through the article marketing, you will generally move up in search engine rankings. On one of my sites, the bulk of my sign-ups are via the search engine (I am number one for one keyword in Yahoo and number two for that keyword in Google) and I hardly do anything for that site.

5) Put an opt-in form on every page of your website. Offer whatever it takes to get subscribers. If they arrived at your site via either of the 4 techniques above, they are buyers. Get them on your list, and mail them regularly.

Bonus tip: If you do not mail them enough, they will forget who you are, so mail at least twice a month, preferably once a week.

Fire Up Your List Building With Three Powerful Solutions

Are you new to list building? If so, how’s it going for you? I mean, how quickly is your list growing? If you haven’t gotten your list building up to the pace you want, let me offer three great solutions:

1. Create a report and give it away for signing up: You can buy private label rights articles or use some articles that you wrote yourself, then compile them into a report. You can offer it on your list building page, just above the opt-in box or as the primary copy on the page. It really doesn’t matter. Either way, you’ll see your opt-ins increase dramatically, just because you’re giving something away.

2. Try co-reg: Co-registration involves advertising your newsletter, ezine, or mailing list alongside the ads of others. There can be any number of sites advertised on one page, and it all depends on the service you try as to whether or not it’s targeted to your niche. List Hero is my co-registration service, and it is targeted to your niche. You design your ad, which his like a classified ad with a headline and a short sentence or two of description, and the co-reg site then gives you a bit of HTML to put on your web site. Your ad will appear there and on other web sites, along with about 4 other lists in your niche. There are other co-registration services that charge you, but you don’t have to advertise on your site or anywhere else. You design the ad, and they do the advertising for you. You can decide how many subscribers you want each month, but the more you buy, the more they cost.

3. Find a good joint venture partner: It’s not hard to make deals with other business owners in your niche. Just be sure that they have a sizable list to share and a product to sell. Then, tell them, “I’d like to do a teleseminar and sell your product to the people who attend. Would you be interested?” When they agree, you set up a list building page, just for that event, and you ask the other person to drive their list members to it by announcing the teleseminar to them. Voila! You’ll have your list building very quickly.

List building is the most important thing you need to do, and you need to work on it every single day. If you have a decent advertising budget, then you might want to think about using paid co-registration, which is like list building on rocket fuel. If you’re adventurous and are looking to form long-term relationships with other business owners, then think about doing joint ventures. But if you’re just starting out, don’t know a lot about marketing yet, and don’t have a very big budget, then you may want to consider offering a free report on your list building page. Whatever you decide, just don’t hesitate, start one of these three methods today and watch the size of your list increase almost instantly.
